MEMA – Not Your Ordinary Emergency Medicine Practice

MEMA – Not Your Ordinary Emergency Medicine Practice

Exceptional Leadership. Exceptional Patient Care.

Mid-Atlantic Emergency Associates sets the benchmark for private practices

Not your ordinary independent physician-owned practice. Mid-Atlantic Emergency Associates, PLLC (MEMA) provides emergency and acute medical care throughout Charlotte and the piedmont area. Founded 44 years ago in 1976, MEMA has grown extensively over the years in structure, governance, and organizational relevance to exemplify the gold standard in physician leadership, partnership, and patient care.

The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) explains, “Emergency medicine is the medical specialty dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of unforeseen illness or injury. The practice of emergency medicine includes the initial evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, coordination of care among multiple providers, and disposition of any patient requiring expeditious medical, surgical, or psychiatric care.”

It begins with the right people. MEMA is defined by its outstanding organizational culture, which is rich in exceptional care of its employees, patients, partners, and leadership outreach. Being a physician-owned practice, they are always looking to find people that add value and it shows. Regularly, MEMA is highlighted in publications written by their clinicians and from those jumping into leadership positions throughout the industry both nationally and regionally.  For instance, there are currently seven physicians active within the North Carolina’s Chapter of College of Emergency Physicians (NCCEP) Board of Directors.

“We search for the brightest providers coming from highly-renowned medical programs and practices. Emergency medicine requires delivery of high-quality medicine and we look for providers who have experience providing this kind of advanced level of care.” says Todd Listwa, MD MEMA physician and recruiting director. He adds, “While MEMA’s strong partnership with Novant Health is appealing, our cohesive team culture is always a driving factor for potential providers.”

Providing leadership within the healthcare industry. Over the past few years, MEMA has participated in a variety of projects all focused on providing better patient care and staying relevant in today’s healthcare world. These include a physician wellness project centered around preventing physician burnout, and most recently, studying provider’s unconscious biases and cross-cultural care, completed during the initial COVID pandemic earlier this year. With a 100% completion rate for the Overcoming Unconscious Biases and a 99% completion rate for the latter module, MEMA’s physician leadership has been working to identify their susceptibilities and learning to overcome these to provide better patient care.

Additionally, MEMA has instituted a unique APP Fellowship Program to provide a post-graduate intensive clinical and didactic program for physician assistants and nurse practitioners that promotes competency and readiness to practice in the highly specialized, complex and demanding emergency care environment.

Beth McInnis, MSN, ARNP, ACNP-BC, FNP-BC MEMA’s Director of Advanced Practice Providers shares, “As a Nurse Practitioner, working for MEMA has allowed me to witness how an organization can truly care for their employees and their families – we all work together and have the greatest respect for one another. I knew MEMA was different from my first interview when I met with their CEO. I wasn’t just a number; I was part of the team.”

Growth and stability. MEMA continues to grow and now employs 56 physicians and 25 Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) all supporting Novant Health’s emergency rooms in Charlotte and surrounding areas. “Growth is something we have been able to handle eloquently throughout the years by providing stability and growth opportunities for our providers and team members. Our strength lies within our membership.” Says Tim Lietz, MD FAECP, CEO of MEMA. “MEMA’s physician retention rate is over 75% which says a lot about our organization to our partners and patients that connects us to committed, quality care.”

44 years later, MEMA continues to blaze its own path filled with exceptional quality care for patients, unmatched partnerships, top-notch providers, and industry leaders that carry this physician-owned group forward to create new and enhanced benchmarks for healthcare here in North Carolina.
